Odd Haugen is a living Legend
A guy that used birch trees for dumbbells seems like a story from an ancient myth but Odd Haugen is this living legend. Odd grew up in Norway and developed a fascination for size and strength. As a kid, Odd found inspiration through Tarzan movies and similar magazines. Gyms and fitness centers were hard to find in his area, which is why he resorted to birch trees for dumbbells. He even took metal shop courses to gain an understanding on how to build strength training devices.
Odds Accomplishments by Using Strongman Training
Growing up he committed himself to a life of outstanding performance and excellence. Through his hard work and dedication, Odd accomplished many highlights including:
- 1997 US Powerlifting Federation Masters National Powerlifting Champion
- 1999 AFSA Strongest Man in America
- 2000, 2001, and 2003 USA Strong Man Champion and Hawaii Strongest Man
The Unliftable Dumbbell
Then in March 2016, at the age of 66, Odd Haugen set a Guinness World Record for lifting the Thomas Inch dumbbell 63 times in 10 minutes. It is also known as the “Unliftable Dumbbell.” This special, over 100-year old dumbbell weighs 172lbs and its handle is about the size of a coke can (2 & 3/8 inches in diameter). Just getting your hand around the handle is hard enough. Watch this video to see Odd break the previous world record of 37 reps in 10 minutes to his new one of 63 reps in 10 minutes.
The Training Hall
Odd is now the owner of the recently opened The Training Hall, a Power Lifting & Strongman Training gym. This awesome gym located in Thousand Oaks, CA, has a variety of heavy lifting, strongman equipment and is dedicated to lifetime passion for strength athletics.
